Customer payback calculator
How many months of the entered contribution recover one customer's acquisition cost?
A teaching example in the units shown below.
These authored example inputs illustrate the calculation. Replace them with your own documented amounts, periods and rates; they are not measured industry averages or available offers.
Include the acquisition spending assigned to one new customer.
Revenue minus your defined serving costs. Keep the same cost basis throughout; allocated fixed overhead changes the measure.

Formula and interpretation
Payback months = acquisition cost per customer ÷ monthly contribution per customer
Whole recovery months = the positive payback period rounded up
To reproduce the worked example, choose Hypothetical arithmetic example under Starting example. Business presets have their own inputs; compare the selected values before applying the result.
Contribution means revenue less your stated serving-cost allocation. It is not revenue alone.
A nonpositive contribution provides no recovery from operating contribution. Zero acquisition cost needs no recovery when contribution is positive.
Worked example: $300 assigned acquisition cost divided by $50 monthly contribution gives six recovery months. At $30 contribution, recovery needs ten months. Neither result is feasible from those contributions if the customer leaves earlier.
For the Pool Cleaning case, define an active monthly account and its serving costs before comparing acquisition spend with contribution. Weekly visits are delivery work for that account; they are not new acquired customers each week.
Definitions and sources
These references support definitions and calculation boundaries, not the selected amounts. Worked examples below use the hypothetical arithmetic inputs. A selected business preset has its own roster, cost allocation and evidence; its results can differ without a formula error.
